This is going to be a very exciting year in Wilmington as we start construction on a new Wilmington High School! I was so proud to be part of the phenomenal effort by the entire Town of Wilmington in showing support for our schools. But the work is just beginning and I want to be sure as construction starts, we give our children not only the building we promised but one that they so deserve. It was my hope 3 years ago to be able to open the doors of a new high school while serving on the Wilmington School Committee, we are one step closer to that goal and one that I hope to fulfill.
Building a new building is not the end all to a better education. There are many more factors such as great teachers, a supportive administration, and a continously updated curriculum that adjusts to the ever changing world our children are facing. Wilmington is very fortunate to have a fantastic educational program and which I am proud to be a part of in some small way.
Providing the very best for our children does come at a price, and I am thankful to the citizens for their outstanding support of our schools, however I can not say the same about the State of Massachusetts. The formulas currently used for Chapter 70 funding are outdated and unfair to cities and towns that have taken a lead in providing the best education for their children. We need to pressure our state legislators to revise the formula for funding public education that is fair and equal for all students. The quality of a student's education should not be decided on a zip code but by equal funding for all.
These are just a few of the issues that are most important to me serving on the Wilmington School Committee. If you have an issue or idea to help improve our schools, let me know!
